Chronology of the Bullinger Edition Correspondence

 

Around 1900

Emil Egli, the first president of the Zwingliverein, considers the publication of Bullinger’s correspondence to be a top priority, but is persuaded by Georg Finsler to give priority to the new Zwingli edition.

19041906

Traugott Schieß edits Bullinger’s correspondence with the Grisons.

1911

Two funds are set up for the publication and printing of the Bullinger Correspondence.

19141930

After Emil Egli had already made around 500 copies, Traugott Schieß transcribed around 6,000 more letters.

1938

Bullinger’s correspondents are listed in a register.

19421947

The unemployed publisher Max Niehans creates partial indexes and registers for several thousand letters.

1961

The Swiss National Science Foundation pays Joachim Staedtke to compile a Bullinger bibliography and to search for further Bullinger letters.

1964

Joachim Staedtke is employed at the newly founded Institute for Swiss Reformation Studies.
  Endre Zsindely joins the preparatory work for the edition of the correspondence. His employment is initially financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and later by the Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich.

1973

Following the development of the editorial concept by Endre Zsindely and Ulrich Gäbler, the first volume of the correspondence (volumes 1524–1531) has been published.

1979

The Zwingliverein is solely responsible for continuing the edition of the correspondence.

1982

Volume 2 (year 1532) is published.

1983

Volume 3 (year 1533) is published.

1986

Death of Endre Zsindely.

1989

Volume 4 (year 1534) is published.

1990

The Edition Correspondence is reassigned to the Institute for Swiss Reformation Studies.

1992

Volume 5 (year 1535) is published.

1995

The contributors to the Edition Correspondence are awarded the Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Foundation Prize for 1994. Volume 6 (volume 1536) is published.

1998

Volume 7 (1537) is published.

1999

Festschrift for Prof. Alfred Schindler.

2000

Volume 8 (1538) is published.

2001

Festschrift for Prof. Rudolf Schnyder.

2002

Volume 9 (1539) is published.

2003

Volume 10 (1540) is published.

2004

Just in time for Bullinger’s 500th birthday, the first “decade” of letters is rounded off with a supplementary volume.

2005

Volume 11 (1541) is published.

2006

Volume 12 (1542) is published.

2008

Volume 13 (1543) is published.

2011

Volume 14 (1544) is published.

2013

Volume 15 (1545) is published.

2014

Volume 16 (January to May 1546) is published.

2015

Volume 17 (June to September 1546) is published.

2017

Volume 18 (October to December1546) is published.
2019 Volume 19 (January to March 1547) is published.
2020 Funding for the project from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich ends.
2021 The “Heinrich Bullinger Foundation”, set up specifically for this purpose by Pastor Christoph Sigrist and Reinhard Bodenmann, is funding the project.
2022 Volume 20 (April to December 1547) is published.
2024 Volume 21 (January to April 1548) is published.
