500 Years of the Faculty of Theology and the Study of Religion: The “Hohe Schule” from 1525 to 1601

Project description

To this day, the education of pastors in Zurich over the centuries remains a research desideratum. Very little has been written or published about the educational institution at the Grossmünster, known as the “Prophezey”, “Hohe Schule” or “Carolinum”. Research to date has not been able to satisfy the demand for a comparative view that comprehensively considers the intellectual, cultural, educational and theological history of Zurich in the context of the groundbreaking changes in early modern Europe.

Considering the school reform in Zurich (1601), which represents a clear turning point in school history, the foundation, teaching staff, subject matter and impact of the “Prophezey” school founded by Zwingli will be examined and illuminated in a broader context. For the first time, a complete bio-bibliographical list of all teachers will also be compiled and published.
